Independence in America becomes isolation and loneliness

I've been saying this for years. Now I'm hearing a program on the radio about a book that says the same thing:

The Lonely American by Jacqueline Olds and Richard S. Schwartz.

Basically, we spend so much time being being independent that we forget to have connections to people. Then we wonder why we get depressed.

And yet when we do reach out we get hurt so we don't do it anymore. And we conclude the answer is to be more independant.

As corney as it is this reminded me of another book: http://www.amazon.com/Living-Loving-Learning-Leo-Buscaglia/dp/0449901815/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235111060&sr=1-1 a friend turned me onto it. I started reading it and Leo starts to suggest ways to deal with this problem, rather than just talking about the problem. But yeah, this is not a 21st century thing, Buscaglia was talking about this problem in 1970.
